MAGGIE STRACHAN

Having taught art at various KZN high schools for nearly forty years, I resigned, about ten years ago, in order to work from my own studio. I now teach adult oil-painting classes and also have time to focus on my own work. Painting, drawing and teaching keep me connected with the world around me and with my own inner world.
I have taken part in numerous group exhibitions of painting and drawing. I am a member of Jeanette Gilk’s Garret Artists drawing studio. I have also conducted numerous painting and drawing workshops in Mauritius. I continue to facilitate dream/ painting workshops in conjunction with Estelle Hudson, a Durban-based therapist who also favours a Jungian approach to dreams.
I am inspired by images in the world around me. When I paint or draw these they are transformed, often surprisingly. As in a dream, recognisable images can take unexpected turns. It is this process that I enjoy most, following the directions in which the painting leads me.
